You do not need the perfect words to begin therapy.
HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT, HOW THE PROCESS WORKS, AND WHERE ART THERAPY FITS
Starting therapy can feel vulnerable, especially when you are already carrying a lot. You may be wondering whether therapy is the right fit, what the first session will be like, whether you need to be “good at art,” or how to know which therapist on our team makes the most sense for you.
You do not have to figure all of that out before reaching out.
At The Art Room, we make the first step simple. We start with a free 15-minute consultation, help you think through fit, and offer therapy that can include both talk and art therapy, depending on what feels most supportive. Our clinicians are trained and licensed in both art and talk therapy, and no art experience is needed.
• In-person in Hagerstown • Virtual across Maryland • No art experience needed • Weekend appointments available

You might be here because…
-
You know something feels hard, but you do not know how to explain it yet
-
You are curious about therapy but nervous about the first step
-
You are interested in art therapy and wondering what it actually looks like
-
You are not sure which therapist would be the best fit
-
You are overwhelmed and want the process to feel simple, clear, and low-pressure
-
You want support, but you do not want to feel thrown into something before you are ready
A lot of people land here feeling interested in therapy and unsure where to begin.
That uncertainty makes sense.
How getting started works
Step 1: Start with a free consultation
Your first step is a free 15-minute consultation. This is a chance to ask questions, get a feel for our approach, and decide whether working together feels supportive.

Step 2: Find the right-fit therapist
We help you think through fit based on what you are carrying, what kind of support you are looking for, and which clinician’s style and specialties align best.

Step 3: Begin at a pace that feels manageable
Your first full session is not about getting everything out perfectly. It is about beginning to build trust, understanding what brings you in, and getting a sense of what support may look like for you.
What to expect from your first therapy session
Your first session is a place to begin, not a test you have to pass.
You do not need to arrive with a polished story.
You do not need to know exactly what your goals are yet.
You do not need to share everything all at once.
The first session is typically a space to talk about what has been feeling hard, what you are hoping for, what questions you have, and what pace feels comfortable.
Your first session may include:
-
talking through what brings you in
-
identifying themes, stressors, or goals
-
getting to know your therapist’s style
-
asking questions about the process
-
beginning to notice what support might fit best

How art therapy fits
Art therapy is not about being artistic or making something “good.” It is a therapeutic process that uses art media, the creative process, and reflection to help people explore emotions, patterns, and experiences that can be hard to reach through words alone.

Some sessions may include mostly talking.
Some may include artmaking alongside conversation.
Some may shift depending on what you need that day.

Art therapy can be especially helpful when:
-
words feel limited or hard to find
-
emotions feel layered or hard to untangle
-
you are stuck in your head and want another way in
-
talking alone has not fully reached what you are carrying

You do not need art experience for art therapy to help.
What therapy can look like over time
Therapy does not have to look the same for everyone. Some people come in with a clear focus. Others begin with a general sense that something is not working and figure it out over time.

As the work unfolds, therapy may help you:
-
understand your patterns more clearly
-
build language for what you feel and need
-
process grief, trauma, identity shifts, or overwhelm
-
strengthen emotional regulation and self-trust
-
feel more connected to yourself and others

You do not have to know everything before taking the first step. You only need a place to begin. Start with a free 15-minute consultation, ask your questions, and let us help you figure out what kind of support feels right.

A few things people want to know
Do I have to do art in every session?
No. Art therapy can be one part of the process, not a requirement for every session. Because your clinicians are trained in both art and talk therapy, the approach can be flexible.
What if I’m nervous to begin?
That is common. The process is designed to begin gently, with a consultation first and space to go at a manageable pace.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
Therapy is a personal decision, and it is okay if you are unsure. A consultation can help you talk through whether therapy feels like the right fit.
Do I need to know exactly what I want to work on before I start?
No. Many people begin therapy with a general sense that something feels heavy, off, or hard to carry.
